Sonos Play 1 is the most economical audio speaker in the Sonos multi-room line. The cost of 198,00€ makes it a good wireless speaker to buy absolutely, especially if you were thinking of buying such a product.
The sound is incredibly powerful and rich: its cylindrical shape makes it perfect for use in any room and is ready to compete with even larger products.
Sonos Play 1 is not the same as other wireless speakers: it does not use Bluetooth technology and, above all, it is not portable.
Although it is the company’s cheapest product, it has managed to create a high quality audio device. Overall, it’s nice to see, especially for those who decide to place it in a clearly visible position of the house.
It is 16 cm tall and has a 12 cm base. It is really easy to place, in fact you can put it on a coffee table, a bedside table, a bookcase or a sideboard of the kitchen and will not take up much space.
A bit like home automation gadgets we’ve grown accustomed to, even this Sonos model doesn’t have many mechanical keys. A volume adjustment button, a play/pause button and an ethernet plug on the back. Of course there is also a power jack because it is not a portable audio speaker, but it needs electricity for its functions.
If you are not familiar with the Sonos system, here’s how it works: any music sent to the device is not streamed using AirPlay or Bluetooth but on a software system based on the Sonos WI-Fi. It’s simple: simply access it via an iOS / Android app or on a computer.
The Sonos system incorporates numerous streaming services including Spotify, Deezer, Amazon music and so on.
In the early days of the Sonos system there was a need to buy a bridge to connect the speakers to Wi-Fi. Nowadays everything is very simple and you can use the device as a traditional wireless speaker.
Today it’s really simple: the first time you launch the app for iOS or Android, the speaker is automatically recognized. Just select your Wi-Fi network and type in your password. That’s it.
If your Sonos has old firmware or if the app has trouble finding your Play: 1, you just have to connect it to your router using the Ethernet cable provided.
The Sonos is a fairly closed device, or at least it was so until the end of 2016 where all the music selection had to pass exclusively through the Sonos app. Although the application itself is very well made, many users complain about Sonos’ so restrictive approach.
To date, users can also Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music (and many others) can benefit from this device to play their favorite music.
Sonos Play:1 is excellent in terms of sound quality. It offers virtually cutting-edge sound quality, even when compared to higher-priced products.
The device has two drivers: one for medium/low and one for high frequencies.
The internal design allows the device to reproduce an excellent, rich and really high sound for its small size. The depth of the bass really leaves you speechless. We used Play: 1 even in various rooms and the different echo of these has never given us any problems.
The highs are quite soft, let’s say they don’t have much clarity as they don’t have a dedicated tweeter. However, I consider this to be a lack because the device is really compact, but I appreciate the work of the company’s internal design.
I won’t hesitate for a second to recommend the device: the model 1 is aimed at those who want quality without spending little, while for those who want the top of the range will have to spend more to take home the Play: 5.
With this model, the company stopped those who said that the products it made were intended exclusively for the “rich”.
Buying Play: 1 is easy, just think that it is one of the best devices on the market and above all it is at a very affordable price. Buy it here, or discover more information about its rival, the Riva Arena.
